Judd

Tonight was turning out to be bizarre. I’d finally gotten my dinner date with Meadow, but we hadn’t even gotten our meal before the table went up in flames and my new friend Ace was flirting with my girl. I’d called dibs, dammit.

Meadow pulled her hands back and put them on my chest. My skin seemed to burn under her touch. “It’s you I’m worried about, Judd. I was standing way over there while you were putting out the flames. Does anything hurt?” She began to run her hands all over my arms and chest, her intense focus on my half naked body creating a situation on the clothed part of my body that wasn’t suitable for the family friendly diner.

I got ahold of her wayward hands and pulled her over to the door, where patrons were slowly trickling back in to recover what was left of their meals. I felt a lot of stares and even got a few pats on the shoulder for a job well done. Which was weird, because I think my flannel flapping had only fanned the flames. If not for Dot coming to the rescue with her fire extinguisher, things could have gotten out of control quickly.

Yedda ran up behind us and pushed a little white bag in my hands. “You forgot your dinner! On the house. Hope you’ll come try the diner again soon.” She gave me a saucy wink and headed back into the kitchen.

Meadow shook her head and mumbled to herself. “Since when does Yedda work for Forty Diner?”

I tugged her arm and held the door open. The sun had already set and I took a long look at the gorgeous reds, oranges, and yellow that streaked the sky as we stood on the sidewalk. I sucked in a deep breath of clean hair and felt my lungs seize. I coughed and Meadow looked at me with alarm.

“I promise you I’m fine.” I quickly diverted her attention. “Can I trust you to get home okay on your own, or will you wreak havoc everywhere you go?”

Her head tilted and she gave me such a dirty look I wanted to take her picture and make a funny meme out of it. Her cheeks were a delightful red, but after a few moments, her lips tilted up and the first bubble of laughter escaped.

“Fine. I deserve that. I walked, actually. I should be able to keep the mayhem on lock down without any open flames, trash cans, or food nearby.”

“Mind if I just drive you home so I can guarantee I won’t be hearing about your bizarre death on the morning news tomorrow?” I tilted my head toward the parked cars along the curb.

Meadow sighed and rubbed her fingers across her forehead. “Yeah, that’s probably for the best. But if you get a flat tire don’t blame me.”

I held back the smile I’d been fighting since I stepped into the diner and saw her face. I put my hand on her back and guided her toward where I’d parked my beast.
